Can your doctor require you to give your social security number?

In response to a call to Law Talk last Saturday, there is no law prohibiting your doctor's office from asking for your social security number.  There is no law requiring them to have it, and really no reason for them to have it.  You are free to decline to provide it, however, the doctor is also free to decline to take you as a patient.

Keep calling Law Talk on Saturdays from 11:00 - Noon at 753-1240.
